Compressors Disk 2 (Oct 1991) : IFFCrunch2.0 / IFFCr.Doc

----------------------------------
IFFCR and IFFL
Crunch and Show ILBM/IFF Art Files
Programs by A. J. Brouwer
Staff Notes
----------------------------------

These programs came our way via a public domain disk from Europe. We
have been unable to contact author A. J. Brouwer. We request the author get
in touch so we can pay our standard fee for using PD material.

IFFCr will crunch an ILBM/IFF art file to about 60 to 66 percent its
original size. That's byte size, not the screen size of the art.
IFFL will display the crunched picture file.
The syntax for IFFCr as it is set up on this disk:

j:iffsqueeze/iffcr [sourcefilename] to [targetfilename]

You will be asked to type a crunch speed number from 1 to 9 as prelude
for the crunching work. The higher the number, the less time is taken to
crunch and the less efficiebt the program is. Lower numbers produce longer
crunch time and more efficiency. However, in JUMPDISK tests we've found the
extra bytes saved are often not worth the exceedingly long time required to
crunch. So enter a 9 to start your own experiments.
IFFCr creates a newly-named crunched version and does not destroy the
old, uncrunched version.

The syntax for IFFL, which displays the compacted screen with no loss
of original quality:

j:iffsqueeze/iffl [filename]

It takes a while to crunch a picture, so be patient. The display
program, however, is quicker.
Be warned that a crunched file can only be shown by IFFL, so don't lose
the original file, should you wish to access it in traditional ways.
On this disk is this month's electronic cover art, Night Flyers. You
may view if by typing, from the CLI or Shell:

j:iffsqueeze/iffl j:cover/coveroct89 <Return>

You may also view the cover by opening the Cover drawer and
double-clicking the NightFlyer icon.
